Don’t Kill your Charisma!

Kurt Mortensen, author of The Laws of Charisma, highlights several subtle mistakes people make that quietly drive others away. He calls them “silent charisma killers.” Most of the time, people won’t tell you that you lack charisma, they’ll simply avoid you.

Here are seven of the most common charisma killers adapted from Mortensen’s list:

  1. Talking Too Much – If you’re always speaking, how can you truly influence or connect with others?

  2. Showing Off What You Know – Coming across as forceful or overly aggressive can make you seem arrogant instead of credible.

  3. Getting Too Friendly Too Fast – Research shows unsolicited small talk often makes people uncomfortable rather than connected.

  4. Becoming Too Comfortable Too Quickly – Respect people, their boundaries, and their space before assuming familiarity.

  5. Ignoring Personal Space (Proxemics) – Invading someone’s space creates discomfort and distrust.

  6. Being One-Sided With Facts – Facts without transparency or genuineness can feel manipulative. People value honesty.

  7. Arguing Just to Be Right – The need to win every discussion often reveals arrogance or insecurity rather than strength.

✨ The real question is: Are you unintentionally killing your own charisma and pushing people away?

What small changes are you willing to make today to strengthen your presence and influence?
