One of the simplest lessons we learn as children may be one of the most useful lessons for adults:

Clean up your own mess.

Not just the things you spill.

The mistake you made.
The promise you didn’t keep.
The words you shouldn’t have said.
The problem you helped create.
The responsibility you tried to avoid.

Growing older doesn’t mean we stop making messes. We just become capable of making bigger ones.

Character shows up in what happens next.

Own it. Fix what you can. Learn from it. And leave things better than you found them.

Maturity isn’t never making a mess. It’s becoming responsible enough to clean up the ones you make.
