There is another reason (probably not the best one to smile but a reason as well…) You can even smile at your enemies. It’s the best way to show your enemy your teeth… or maybe better to bare your teeth to someone (don’t really know how to translate it properly…). “Jemandem die Zähne zeigen”… You know, like a dog when they get aggressive and bare their teeth?
